Frequently asked questions

Last updated: 1 juni 2026

Is Registro Bonaire a government register?

No. Registro Bonaire is an independent, private and commercial vehicle register. It is not a government agency and our registration is not a government document. We record ownership and transfer digitally as a supplement to — not a replacement for — the government's official license plate registration.

We prove ownership chains with cryptographic hashes and offer public verification. Our registration has informational value between seller and buyer; it is not independent legal proof and does not replace a statutory license plate document. Formal legal recognition would require a change in the law (an open question in the BES legislation review).

What is the difference with a license plate document?

The license plate is a legal document and on Bonaire it is tied to the person — it travels with the owner, not with the vehicle. When the vehicle is sold, it gets a new license plate. That is why we track the VIN (chassis number), which stays the same throughout the entire life of the vehicle. This lets you trace ownership history reliably, even after several sales.

What happens when a vehicle is sold?

The seller starts the transfer in their dashboard. The buyer confirms via an email link, and a one-time fee of $13.10/€13.10 is paid (by the seller or the buyer, depending on what the seller chooses). Adding proof of insurance is optional — not required. After payment:

  • The vehicle owner in the database flips to the buyer
  • Both parties receive a digital proof of ownership with a cryptographic hash
  • The proof is publicly verifiable at /verify/<hash>

The transfer is fully digital — you do not have to print anything or keep a PDF. The complete ownership chain stays available online for future owners and buyers.

Which currency do I pay in?

USD is primary — the official currency on Bonaire. During checkout you can also choose EUR; amounts are converted 1:1 ($13.10 = €13.10). Apple Pay and iDEAL are available (EUR route), credit card works for both.

How secure is my data?

  • Hosting: Supabase Frankfurt (EU servers, GDPR)
  • Database: Row-Level Security policies — only you see your vehicles
  • No sale to third parties — see privacy policy
  • Proofs of ownership: the public lookup shows only vehicle master data + theft status, never the owner's name or CRIB
  • History reports: anonymized — no identity data in the PDF

What if my vehicle is stolen?

From your dashboard: Report theft → the vehicle gets stolen status, immediately visible in the public lookup. Anyone who looks up the license plate/VIN sees a STOLEN banner within seconds.

A formal link with KPCN is in development. Until then, our report counts as an informational indication toward an insurer or a buyer.

What is a history report?

An anonymized PDF with:

  • Vehicle master data (make, model, year, license plate history, VIN)
  • Number of ownership changes (without names)
  • Date of first registration
  • Theft status (current and historical)

For buyers, before they buy a used vehicle. $10 (€10), valid for 90 days from purchase. Delivered by email (and available in your dashboard when you are logged in).

Does the history report also cover seizure, financing or outstanding debts?

No. A history report shows what is recorded within this register: vehicle master data, license plate history, the number of registered ownership transfers and the theft status. It is not a financial or legal investigation — seizure, ongoing financing, lease contracts or outstanding debts are not included and we cannot check them.

If you want to be certain that a vehicle is free of seizure or financing, visit a notary or KPCN for that check. Our report is meant to give insight into ownership and history, as a supplement to that.

What is a CRIB number?

The CRIB number is your personal tax number with the Belastingdienst Caribisch Nederland (the Caribbean Netherlands tax office; comparable to the BSN in the European Netherlands), consisting of 8-12 digits. You will find it on letters and assessments from the Belastingdienst CN.

In Registro Bonaire the CRIB number is optional — you can register and transfer without it. Adding it helps to identify you unambiguously as the owner. The number is never visible in public lookups or history reports.

Can I undo my registration?

Yes. Via Account → Support email you request deletion. We delete:

  • Personal data (name, email, CRIB)
  • Vehicle links to your account

We retain anonymized audit data (transfer hashes, theft reports) without any identity link — in accordance with GDPR art. 17(3)(e).

What happens to my data if Registro Bonaire stops?

You remain the owner of your own data. Under the GDPR you can request an export of your data at any time — a copy of the registrations and transfers linked to your account.

Should the service ever stop, we will wind the register down properly: registered owners are notified in advance and given the opportunity to export their data, after which the data is deleted in accordance with our privacy policy. We make no legal promises we cannot keep — but you will never lose your own data without first getting the chance to take it with you.

  • Motorcycle: $9.95 (€9.95)
  • Scooter: $7.50 (€7.50)
